ITIL ITSM Introduction

Configuration Management - Mission, Scope and Aim.

The Configuration Management is told to be the most crucial among other ITIL processes. All of them are underpinned by the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) which consists of the complex and detailed information on IT Service Infrastructure (refer to the dedicated article for more detailed information on CMDB). This information is indispensable for efficient and effective service provision to the client system - you just must know or at least be able to get the data on the architecture of your system, hardware and software components, documentation etc. All of this and even more should be gathered and made available by the Configuration Management process. So the scope of the process seems to be wide and that's how it should be implemented in order to be a reliable and up-to-date source of information for other process.
Apart of mentioned areas the Configuration Management is responsible for the software license management though this will not be described here more detail.
To sum up, the aim of the Configuration Management is to increase the level of service quality by the proper maintenance and updating the CMDB. The process is a basic element on which the Service Level Management and other processes are able to be run effectively.
