Configuration Management – main activities
The Configuration Management (CM) process consists five core activities:
- Planning. Before IT infrastructure is set up there should be a defined and reviewed configuration of that infrastructure. The organizational and technical context should also be described.
- Controlling. The access to the CMDB must be limited and it should not be updated without a proper permission. This is what the CM does – controls the access.
- Status accounting. Elements of the CMDB – CI’s are not static items – they change permanently while they life cycle (see the “Configuration Management key words” article). The status of the CI should be reported, that is how the historical data is created and that is how the tracking of CI changes is possible.
- Verification and audit. The CMDB must be audited in order to verify that it keeps its state up- to date. The Configuration Process checks the physical existence of CMBD elements and verifies whether they are properly recorded.
